Medical Compression Spring Applications

Compression springs are very commonly used in all sorts of products and devices in the medical and surgical industry. Medical compression springs require a higher standard quality and material grade due to the use and possible contact inside the human body. The following is a list of some common applications for medical and surgical compression springs.

  • Inhalers:Inhalers use compression springs to administer medicine. When the inhaler is ready to be used, it is placed in the proper position and pressed. When the top section is pressed a compression spring assists in creating the necessary resistance for just a small dose of medication to be released, and then returns it to a non-releasing position. This motion is repeated as necessary, based on the prescribed dosage.
  • Auto-injector syringe: There are many different types of auto-injector syringes. Usually what varies is the medication or active ingredient, but they basically carry the same function. Auto-injector syringes contain a compression spring that is pre-loaded. When the spring is released, its function is to apply enough force on the needle to penetrate the skin. They also regulate the flow of the medication into the body. One of the most common auto-injector syringe types are EpiPens. EpiPens facilitate the self-administration (or self-injection) of epinephrine (a life-saving drug for those with severe allergic reactions) in any setting or environment. These auto-injector pen-like syringes also contain small compression springs and are compact which make it easy for anyone to carry and use when necessary. .

  • Stainless steel springs for Colonoscope clicker: Many medical springs are made out of stainless steel.
