Big Compression Springs
Definition: Open wound coil springs considered to be large in size due to the wire size used to make them or other physical dimensions such as outer diameter and free length.
Big compression springs can be made from different material types. The proportion in their dimensions will determine if your large spring is a light or heavy duty spring. Buy high quality large compression springs in stock or have them made custom to fit your specific requirements.
There are many different wire material types used to manufacture large compression springs. The most popular for larger size springs are chrome silicon and stainless steel 302. Chrome silicon is the most common and economical material type in sizes over 0.115”. It is also a fine substitute of music wire since music wire isn’t made in large sizes. Stainless steel 302 is the generic stainless steel type. It is as corrosive resistant as the other more extravagant stainless steel types, but it will only withstand temperatures as high as 550ºF (288ºC) and it is a magnetic metal.
If you’re interested in buying a large spring made from either of these materials, you can generate a quote using our Instant Spring Quote tool.

Determining if your compression spring is a large spring is a matter of perspective. At CompressionSpring.com we consider a large compression spring to made of a wire diameter larger than 0.100” and with outer diameters wider than 1”. In order for your spring to be a large heavy duty spring, the proportion in your spring’s dimensions will have to be tight. Heavy duty springs usually have hefty wire diameters and small outer diameters. Otherwise, you might have a large spring in size yet not very strong.
Use our spring calculator, Spring Creator, to calculate your large spring’s force and generate a blueprint. This will help you turn any large spring into a light or heavy duty spring.
As manufacturers we can manufacture your precision large springs or you can search our stock spring catalog for similar springs. To use our instant quote generator, you can use material types like chrome silicon, stainless steel 302, and stainless steel 17-7. Not all wire sizes are available in all material types so you can use the table in this page to determine what wire size to use. Spring Finder (provided at the top of every page) is our stock spring search engine. Enter the ranges you would like your large compression spring to have and click search. You will be provided with a list of all the stock springs meeting your requirements.
With our state-of-the-art technology, you can design and shop for your large compression springs in an effective and efficient manner. If you have any trouble using any of these tools, our customer service and technical engineering departments will be more than glad to answer your questions so we can guide you in the right direction.
